Anatomy Of Skin

It is important for our clients to have a basic understanding of skin anatomy to appreciate the anti-aging techniques and procedures we offer at Da Vinci Medical Spa (DMS) Inc.

Human skin is complex. It is composed of several layers, each responsible for a defined function. The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, is composed of several sub-layers and is responsible for protecting the body from the external environment. Keratinocyte cells make up 90% of the epidermis and are responsible for waterproofing skin and protecting us from the heat and cold. Melanocytes compose 8% of the epidermis and are responsible for producing the pigment melanin which determines skin color and protects us from damaging UV light.
The 5 sub layers of the epidermis range from the underlying stratum basale, where new skin cells are born, to the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of dead and dying skin cells. Underlying the epidermis is the dermis which is composed mainly of collagen and elastin. These help to give our skin its feel and texture. The dermis contains pain and touch receptors and many of our functional glands - sweat glands, hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands produce the oil that moisturizes skin.

Overactive sebaceous glands, in combination with bacteria, are one of the primary causes of acne. The dermis also contains blood vessels that provide nutrients to the skin and millions of sensory receptors that recognize pain, pressure and temperature. Lying below the dermis is the fatty subcutaneous layer otherwise known as the hypodermis. By using specialized creams, light energy, injectables and lifestyle modifications either individually or combined, we are confident that DMS has the solution for your particular aesthetic concern.
